On Freedom’s Wings: Celebrating the Official Opening Ceremony

At Witham Group, we are incredibly proud to have been actively involved in a project that truly captures the spirit of our local heritage. Next weekend marks the long-awaited official opening ceremony of the “On Freedom’s Wings” sculpture, and we couldn’t be more thrilled to see this masterpiece finally open to the public.

Having provided all the paint for this immense structure, it is an honour to see the finished result. To celebrate the launch, three unique events are taking place to raise essential funds for ongoing maintenance and to share the history of this remarkable landmark.

A Landmark Achievement

After years of dedicated hard work, The Bomber Gateway Trust has successfully installed this fantastic Lancaster Bomber art installation at Norton Disney. Positioned on the border of Nottinghamshire and Lincolnshire, it is now a striking sight for everyone passing along the A46.

This achievement is now ready for its official debut during the Opening Ceremony Weekend, from 15th – 17th May 2026.

Why This Project Matters

The weekend offers a chance to visit the sculpture and, importantly, support the Trust in maintaining this nationally significant landmark. “On Freedom’s Wings” serves as a poignant reminder of the Lancaster Bomber’s role during WWII, the many airfields based across our region—including RAF Winthorpe (now Newark Showground)—and, most importantly, the sacrifices made by the brave servicemen involved.

The Opening Ceremony Events

There are three ways you can join us in supporting the celebrations:

• The Bomber Ball (Friday 15th May): A gourmet dinner with dancing to a swing band, an auction, and a special night viewing of the sculpture.

• The Opening Ceremony (Saturday 16th May, 14:00–17:00): The official dedication ceremony, featuring afternoon tea, music, and your first opportunity to explore the site.

• Celebration Day (Sunday 17th May, 13:30–16:30): A relaxed afternoon of talks, live 1940s music, and a freshly cooked BBQ while you learn about the history of the sculpture.
