Ariel Motor Company: “Our engines are very high revving, which puts a lot of stress on the lubrication”

The Ariel Motor Company is probably most well-known for the Atom, the skeletal, space-age road-rocket that famously rippled Jeremy Clarkson’s face on Top Gear. But the company actually has a 150-year heritage in making motorcycles and cars, starting back in 1871 with the Ariel Ordinary bicycle. Since then, the company has always strived to break down automotive boundaries.

Now, it makes some of the most extreme, driver-and-rider-focused cars and bikes you can lay your hands on. Joining the Atom in the stable are the Nomad, an off-road buggy that wouldn’t look out of place on a Dakar stage, and the Ace, a naked sportsbike that revives Ariel’s illustrious motorcycle heritage. Motul, who also has a long heritage of innovation and passion, recently joined forces with the Ariel Motor Company to supply the British car and bike manufacturer with its range of innovative high-performance lubricants. Motul caught up with Ariel’s parts manager, Matt Childs, to find out more.

Matt, tell us more about the company?

We’re Ariel, a small car manufacturer, kind of a cottage industry really. We produce high-quality, hand-built, bespoke products down to the customer’s specifications. So, you get that really bespoke personal touch as well as a very high-performance machine.

What makes Ariel cars special?

Our priorities are performance, but also weight is also a big consideration and longevity. A lot of the products are used aggressively; they go through quite a lot of strain and stresses. So that’s also a consideration when we design and purchase parts as well. We’re looking for good quality products

How important are the lubricants used in your cars, and why do you choose to use Motul?

Historically, Ariel has used naturally aspirated and supercharged engines in its cars. Now we’re in the turbo era, oils have moved on a long way. The cars can be used for a couple of days a year, or they could be used every day. When they are being used, it’s predominantly on track. Being Honda engines, they are very high revving, which puts a lot of stress on the lubrication. So that is also a consideration for us. We wanted someone who knew what they were doing when it comes to lubrication. At the minute we get all our fluids from, previously, very different suppliers. So, it’s quite nice to go to one technical partner who will supply us with oils, lubrication, coolant and brake fluid. We know that Motul is a trusted brand, and all the products are very high quality.

Tom Siebert, Managing Director of Ariel added…

As the latest generation of Ariel vehicles become more technically sophisticated, aligning ourselves with a lubricants partner sharing the same values makes perfect sense. We at Ariel are always striving for technological advancement, along with class-leading performance and reliability, and know that this sentiment is shared by Motul. We are very proud to be associated with Motul and know that their heritage, core values and vision will play a key part in helping drive Ariel forward.
